What Will You Need To Repair and/or Surface Your Hard Court

Crack Repair

Ninety-nine percent of all hard tennis courts in existence today have some degree of cracking. Cracks will generally fall into three categories: smaller non-structural cracks, larger structural cracks, and clustered shrinkage cracks.

For Smaller Cracks Use CrackLastic

For cracks less than 1/2" wide, our CrackLastic elastomeric crack filler is your best option. The most flexible of our crack filling products, CrackLastic is able to stretch and contract with small movements of non-structural cracks. CrackLastic is available in three colors: green, red, and neutral. For the best color match, take a sample of your surface (a 1" square chip from under the net or outside the fence) to your local paint store and ask them to make enough matching tint for one gallon of paint. Mix this tint with one gallon of CrackLastic Neutral. You will find your patches very closely match the old court surface. Unless you are adding tint to neutral, CrackLastic is ready to use. Just dip your putty knife into the mix and start patching.

For Larger (Structural) Cracks Use Super Patch Kit or TruPatch

Both of these product work very well for filling larger cracks (1/2" or wider). The SuperPatch Kit includes 2 gallons of Super Patch Binder, and 3 gallons of fine silica sand pre-mixed portland cement. TruPatch is a blend of SuperPatch Binder and fine silica sand. You will need to add 1 gallon of sifted portland cement to every 5 gallon pail of TruPatch. Both of these products are tough enough for the big cracks and much more flexible than standard cement products mixed with water. Unfortunately, no crack filling compound will hold back even the slightest structural movement. If you are looking for a permanent crack repair consider our CrackSpan System.

Use Super Patch Binder As A Slurry Coat To Fill Shrinkage Cracks

Super Patch Binder mixed with sand and cement can also be applied, with a squeegee, over areas with clustered shrinkage or age cracks. For this application it is mixed a little looser than you would make patch mix for filling cracks and low spots.

Most builders supply companies, such as Home Depot and Lowes, carry pre-mixed sand and portland cement products usually called 'Sand Topping Mix', 'Sand-Mix Cement', or 'Vinyl Patch'. All will work fine, but we have come across some bags with quarter-inch size rocks in the mix, which can leave big grooves in your patches. We sell a very fine silica sand which you can mix with portland cement and Super Patch Binder for smooth patches every time. One - 5 gallon pail of Super Patch Binder will make 15 gallons of patch mix. You will need approximately 2 - 50lb. bags of sand and 1/3 bag of portland, or 2 - 60lb. bags of sand-mix cement for every 5 gallon pail of Super Patch Binder.

Patching Low Areas And Other Surface Irregularities

TruPatch For Thin Patches

For patches 1/4" or less, TruPatch is a ready-mix patching compound that is easy to apply and gives you plenty of working time. One gallon of portland cement should be added to every 5 gallons of TruPatch. It should be applied in layers not to exceed 1/8".

For Patches Up To 1" deep, Use SuperPatch Kit or SuperPatch Binder

If your patches are between 1/4" and 1" deep, use SuperPatch Kit or SuperPatch Binder mixed with sand and portland cement (described above). SuperPatch should be applied in layers not to exceed 1/4".

DeepPatch For Patches Deeper Than 1"

DeepPatch can be applied as deep as 2" in one layer. A word of caution: This product has a working time of only 10 minutes from the time it is mixed with water. Make sure the area to be patched is ready and apply patch immediately.

Preparing New Concrete

If you are surfacing over bare concrete you should apply one coat of EnviroBond acrylic bonding agent to ensure good adhesion of the EnviroFill and/or EnviroCoat acrylic coatings. Prior to the application of Envirobond, acid etch the concrete with a solution of 4 parts water and 1 part Muriatic acid. Flush the acid from the surface thoroughly. Please call us if your concrete does not have a broom finish.

Filler Coating For New Asphalt And Other Rough Surfaces

For surfacing over new asphalt or a rough or pitted surfaces, you should apply one or two coats of Envirofill Acrylic Resurfacer. EnviroFill is a black coating with heavy fiber and sand to fill rough surfaces prior to the application of color-coatings. It should not be used as a finish coat.

Cushion Under-Coatings For A More Comfortable Playing Surface

If you want a really special surface, consider EnviroCushion. Applied in multiple coats (between 3 and 12), prior to the color-coatings, EnviroCushion provides a resilient rubber under-surface which reduces stress on the legs back and hips. Each coat of EnviroCushion will cost between $1,200.00 and $1,500.00 per single tennis court or 17 to 21 cents per square foot per coat. EnviroCushion comes in two grades: EnviroCushion I for thinner, smoother coats, and EnviroCushion II for thicker coats. Any EnviroCushion II coats must be followed by, at least, two coats of EnviroCushion

Attractive, Non-Slip Color Coatings For The Surface Finish

The heart of the tennis or basketball court surface, EnviroCoat textured 100% acrylic color coatings provide a beautiful, non-slip, protective finish. You can choose from 9 colors: Dark Green, Light Green, Dark Red, Red, Dark Blue, Light Blue, Tan, Brown, and Gray.

Surfacing And Patching Tools

A few specialized tools we carry in our store are a must for most court projects. You will need a surfacing squeegee to properly apply the court coatings and the V-Shaped crack filling squeegee will save your back serious wear-and-tear if you have more than a few hundred feet of cracks. The tape machine rental is not absolutely necessary, but is a major back-saver for taping lines. At only $50.00 per week, it's a deal.
